ABB wins R55 million power products national contract in South Africa

Johannesburg, South Africa, February 19, 2010 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has recently concluded a two-year national supply contract with Eskom, for the manufacture and supply of ‘free-standing outdoor‘ SafeRing ring main units; with a projected order value of approximately R55 million.

This contract, commencing in January 2010, has a projected requirement for 570 units and will be valid for all respective Eskom Distribution regional purchases. The units meet the various inland and coastal outdoor specifications prescribed by the customer, with a variety of unit configurations, suitable for switching applications in 12/24 kV distribution networks.

The SafeRing ring main units have a completely sealed system with a stainless steel tank containing all the live parts and switching functions. The sealed stainless steel tank is filled with SF6 gas which ensures a high level of reliability as well as personnel safety and a virtually maintenance-free system.The panels are manufactured to ISO 9001 and 14001 standards and are tested according to all relevant IEC standards.
